Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman believes the award could be a trendsetter for future generations of percussionists.
He said, “This is the first time the mridhangam has been selected for the most prestigious award and I am really fortunate to be the first recipient. For all my service to the art of mridhangam, spanning over 60 years, I consider this award a signal honour to me and my musical career. It will also be a trendsetter for the present and future generations of percussionists who can strive and achieve such honours by their total dedication and sincerity.”

The Kshetra Sangeetham Series to start in January 1st

This concert series, in association with Narada Gana Sabha, will comprise a presentation about various aspects of the Kshetra – the temples and their uniqueness, the composers who have sung in praise of the kshetra and other aspects of musical significance. This will be followed by a music concert with a focus on different vaggeyakaras' compositions on the kshetra. click here for details

Sangeetha Kalanidhi Award

Sangeetha Kalanidhi is the title awarded yearly to an expert Carnatic Musician by the Madras Music Academy. This honour is considered one of the highest award in Carnatic music.Carnatic musicians view the 'Sangita Kalanidhi' from The Music Academy, Madras, as a crowning glory. Tamil Isai Sangam has been conferred ‘Isaiperaringnar’ award on Carnatic musician Aruna Sairam at the sixty seventh annual Tamil Isai festival held on 11/12/2009.
Addressing presspersons, the Sangam’s honorary secretary A.C. Muthiah said the award has been given to 53 eminent personalities so far. Supreme Court of India judge P. Sadasivam would present the award comprising medallion, a silver ornament and a cash prize of Rs.10,000 at the inauguration of the festival at Raja Annamalai Mandram |
| DK Pattammal passed away
 Chennai: 16th June 2009: Smt. DK Pattammal (90) the all time carnatic music exponent passed away this afternoon at her residence in Kottoorpuram, Chennai. Smt. Pattammal was bedridden for quite a long time. Pattammal, M. S. Subbulakshmi and M. L. Vasanthakumari were often popularly referred to as the "female trinity of Carnatic Music". Smt. Pattammal was born in an orthodox Brahmin family in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu district. Smt. DK Pattammal had her first radio broadcast for Madras Corporation Radio (The present All India Radio) in 1929, at a very young age of 10.
She got the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1961, Sangeetha Kalanidhi (considered to be the top most tribute in Carnatic music) in 1970, the Padma Bhushan in 1971, and the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor, in 1998.
Smt. DK Pattammal is also privileged with quite a huge number of promising disciples. The top of the list includes her own younger brother, DK Jayaraman. The demise of Smt. DK Pattammal is indeed a heavy loss for the carnatic music world.
